Angul: The lifeless body of an 11-year-old girl, who had been reported missing, was discovered in a drain in Angul district, Odisha, on Sunday. This tragic event prompted local residents to block a road in protest, demanding swift action against those responsible for her death, according to a police spokesperson.
The girl's body was located in the Shyamsundarpur region, falling under the jurisdiction of the Angul Sadar Police Station.
She had gone out to play on Saturday evening, and when she failed to return, her family and neighbors began searching for her.
A formal complaint was filed with the local police late Saturday night, indicating that she had disappeared while playing nearby, as stated by Angul Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Jain.
Based on the complaint submitted by the girl's father, an investigation was initiated, leading to the recovery of her body from a drain close to Shyamsundarpur the following morning.
Following the discovery, a forensic team along with police and a search dog arrived at the scene to commence their investigation.
The SP assured that he would personally oversee the case.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the precise cause of death will be determined after the autopsy results are available, Jain noted.
The SP mentioned that the police would explore all possibilities, as some locals have alleged that the girl was raped before being murdered.
In response to the incident, residents blocked the Angul-Bantala Road, demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and justice for the victim's family.
This blockade resulted in significant disruption to traffic on the road for several hours, according to another police officer.
